Easily store your bike energy and then provide power to any of these items up to 400W

NTL = No Time Limit which means you would be able to pedal indefinitely without getting tired.  The calculations below  assume durations based on you running off of the deep cycle battery when the battery starts fully charged 100% SOC down to 50% SOC This means you are only going to use half of the battery's storage capacity.   The reason for this is because only using 50% of the battery's capacity will optimize the life of your battery.  Yes- the sad but true way of the lead acid deep cycle battery is that it doesn't like to be fully discharged.  You will kill it quick if you let it discharge all the way.   Click HERE to see more information.

CHARGE TIME

If your Xantrex 400 Power Pack is 50% charged, and you pedal with nothing hooked up to it, then it would take approx. 2 to 3 hours to charge it.

 

 

BATTERY DURATION

The Xantrex 400 power pack has a sealed 18 Amp Hour (AH) Absorbed Glass Mat Battery inside of it.  After you charge the battery with a pedal power bike generator, you can provide power to various devices.    Luckily I was able to find the data below at http://www.power-sonic.com for you to look at.  To figure out how long your battery will last, calculate how many Amps your device is pulling, and use the graph below to figure your discharge time.

         

Let's assume you wanted to power a 100 Watt Light Bulb.  First you would account for the efficiency of the AC inverter inside of the Xantrex 400 power pack .  So you multiply 100 Watts times 1.2 because the inverter is 80% efficient.  So really your battery would be putting out 120 Watts to power a 100 Watt light bulb through the AC inverter. 

 

Next you need to figure out how many Amps is being drawn from your battery at 120 Watts of power consumption.  To do this you use the formula Watts = Current x Voltage.  Or solving for current you would get: 

 

Current = Watts / Voltage.  

 

So in this case you have:

 120 Watts / 12 Volts = 10 Amps of current

 

Now using the discharge characteristics graph to the top right , you will see that 10 Amps has a discharge time of about 1 hour. (There is no "10" on the curve, but you can see where "9" is and approximate that 10 would be about 1.1 or 1.2 hours of discharge time.

 

Note that the Xantrex 400 power pack has an alarm that will sound off when your battery reaches 11.0 volts and turns off automatically at 10.5 Volts.  This feature is called "Low Voltage Drop Out" or "LVD".  It's a very nice feature.  To learn click on the owner's manual shown below.

ENERGY RETENTION CAPABILITY OF YOUR BATTERY BASED ON DEPTH OF DISCHARGE NUMBER OF CYCLES

Looking at the data below, you can see that the battery in your Xantrex 400W power pack it maintain it's ability to absorb energy from your bike generator much longer if you only discharge it 30%.  1,200 charge cycles is much more than 600 cycles.  So if you work out every day, charge your powerpack, then use your stored energy to work on your laptop for 1 hour a day, your battery would last about two years.
